Man Ray – Les Treize Clichés Vierges
Published by Sergio Tosi, Milan, January 1969
#10 of Edition of 550 numbered copies
This beautifully produced artist’s book by Man Ray brings together thirteen poetic female portraits, each named (Anne, Béatrice, Catherine, etc.) and accompanied by Surrealist texts by André Breton, Paul Éluard, and Rrose Sélavy. The title, Les Treize Clichés Vierges (“The Thirteen Virgin Plates”), plays on the dual meaning of “cliché” as both photographic plate and tired phrase, reimagining it through Man Ray’s linear, whimsical illustrations and typographic play.
The book is housed in a green cloth slipcase with matching hardbound cover, stamped with Man Ray’s monogram. The typography and imagery throughout reflect Man Ray’s unique fusion of eroticism, symbolism, and Surrealist wit, all presented in a refined and intimate format.
A beautifully preserved copy in Very Good+ to Near Fine condition, complete with original slipcase. Minimal shelf wear; interiors pristine
